Maura Zonta (alias Libe) was born in Monfalcone, North East of Italy, in 1959. She did not grow up in the path of an artist. Instead she studied classics as well as architecture at university, where she received her degree.
These two things, North East of Italy and her intellectual background are “the two keys” to enter Libe’s art-world and comprehend it. North East of Italy, in the Past, from the Roman Eastern Empire to the end of Habsburg Empire, was a strategic cross-road from Europe, Middle East and Far East culture, as far as Chine. Libe’s use of colour gold , her preference for geometrical Islamic patterns, the pleasure to use vivid colours remind us mosaics from Byzantium , as well as precious silk fabric from the ancient Cathay .
But not only…Her artistic experience was very impressed by antique Venetian culture, in art , architecture and literature , as the golden mosaics in St. Mark basilica , as well as vivid colours in Venetian Glasses and Venetian traditional carnival masks, become famous not only by popular culture, but also by comedies of C. Goldoni.The theme of Venetian carnival inspired Libe’s artworks, titled “Arlecchini”.
Furthermore Maura Zonta Libe’s art incorporates “Mitteleuropean” culture, as well as Viennese characteristics. These are the reasons behind her profound interest in the “Association of Austrian Artists – Vienna Secession”, like J. Hoffmann, K. Moser and especially G. Klimt.
Her painting technique, however, obtained by dotting the surface with ever fading colours, reveals Libe’s passion for Divisionism and Futurism. She has in mind the paintings of Seurat , as well as the artworks of Severini. And from the spirit, the colours and the technique of Boccioni she learnt the importance of obtaining movement and light by dots of vibrant colours.
She was also influenced by geometrical-abstract artworks of Balla , as far as the more rigorous geometrical artworks of P. Mondrian and the paintings of B. Nicholson .
All these cultures and techniques combine to produce very colourful pieces, rendering Libe’s work to be constantly vibrant and luminous.
Her art can be defined as “Post-modern” utilizing various abstract-geometric features that were prominent during the late nineteen hundreds.
Her works begin from one particular focal point, however expand, creating a three dimensional concept without limitations, as her work can be an accumulation of fragmented memories.
The objects that Libe chooses to work with and paint over play a large role in the creative process of the piece. In sculpture the first step of the process is the making of the sphere as well its stand, both of which are made from solid beech wood. Every piece is created to occupy “a volume” in space.. This three-dimensional aspect , most perceptible on the spheres, however is also clear on her canvas, as she specifically chooses thick canvas, to allow her art to flow off the sides. Libe is able to create focal points of light, that radiate across the entire canvas, so her art is truly abstract. Light and colours, similar to explosions on an astronomic scale, are of service to her formal constructions.
The manipulation of true form brings about ideas of ancient times as if it were a reconstruction of your feeling towards previous experiences. This idea is an adaptation of Ben Nicholson’s theory that geometric sequences represent the way in which experiences are filtered in our mind.
Libe’s sequences are extremely unique due to how personally involved she feels with her art, that is like a rigorous architectural construction, nonetheless it is this structure that brings her art to life.
